NIH Stimulus Funding Opportunities
NIH Grand Opportunities (GO) Grants Program NIH has released two new announcements related to Recovery Act funding. The first, the Recovery Act "Grand Opportunities" Grants program (nicknamed "GO" grants), will support high-impact ideas that lend themselves to short-term, non-renewable funding and may lay the foundation for new areas of investigation. Applicants may propose to address a specific research question or to create a unique infrastructure/resource designed to accelerate scientific progress in the future.
For important details about the project scope and specific requirements for these grants, see http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-OD-09-004.html Applications for NIGMS "GO" grants should be responsive to the NIGMS topic list, which is posted at http://www.nigms.nih.gov/Research/GrandOpportunityAreas.htm
Recovery Act program for Biomedical Research Core Centers to Enhance Research Resources: Help in Hiring Faculty The Recovery Act program for Biomedical Research Core Centers to Enhance Research Resources, is intended to help institutions hire tenure-track faculty. The formal name relates to the P30 mechanism that is used. NIGMS will consider applications from institutions to hire, and help support start-up packages for, faculty who are newly independent investigators doing research related to the NIGMS mission. We are particularly interested in helping to restart faculty searches that were discontinued due to economic constraints.
The request for applications is at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-OD-09-005.html

NCRR Other Program Announcements The National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), part of the National Institutes of Health, is pleased to announce several new funding opportunities that may be of interest to your members. These opportunities, which are made possible through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, are designed to stimulate the nation's economy. Funding areas include construction, renovation, repair and shared instrumentation to support biomedical and/or behavioral research.
Under ARRA, NCRR will administer more than $1.6 billion in federal grants in the following areas:
• $1 billion for construction, repair and renovation of research facilities Recovery Act Limited Competition: Extramural Research Facilities Improvement Program (C06), PAR-RR-09-008 Recovery Act Limited Competition: Core Facility Renovation, Repair, and Improvement (G20), PAR-RR-09-007
• $300 million for shared instrumentation and other capital research equipment Addition of Recovery Funds to the Shared Instrumentation Grant Program (S10), NOT-RR-09-008 Recovery Act Limited Competition: High-End Instrumentation Grant Program (S10), PAR-RR-09-118
• Up to $301 million in support of biomedical research priorities (additional details available soon)
Additionally, through a new NIH challenge grant program supported primarily with ARRA funds from the NIH Office of the Director, NCRR will sponsor research on health and science problems where progress can be expected in two years.
