Welcome to the College of Basic Sciences. Whether you are a student, alumnus or friend, a member of industry, a K-12 teacher, or a fellow academician, I’m confident that you will find useful information on the pages of our website.
LSU is classified as a Research Extensive university, which means it is among the nation’s premier research institutions. The five departments that constitute the College of Basic Sciences form the nucleus of LSU’s research enterprise, and our faculty, staff, and students embrace the challenge of leading LSU into a new era of excellence. Our research expertise ranges from subatomic particles to entire ecosystems, from the origins of the universe and planet earth to genomics and quantum computing.
Research throughout the world is becoming increasingly interdisciplinary, and faculty in Basic Sciences are embracing the trend. For example, the Center for Biomodular Multiscale Systems (CBM2) includes LSU faculty from the departments of Chemistry, Biological Sciences, and Mechanical Engineering, as well as faculty from universities and centers across the state and the nation. Our faculty also make use of extraordinary facilities at or close to LSU such as the Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD), the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO), Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Center for Computation and Technology (CCT), and the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON).
We attract excellent students from Louisiana, the nation, and the world. Both our undergraduate and graduate students are intimately involved with the world-class research programs of our faculty, an exposure that significantly enhances the total educational experience of students. Through the grant-writing efforts of our faculty and staff, we are able to provide financial support to 100’s of undergraduate students for a variety of research opportunities.
I hope you find what you’re looking for at our virtual home. If you don’t, please send an e-mail to John Grubb, Director of Communications, at cxjohn@lsu.edu. He’ll be glad to help you.
Sincerely, Kevin R. Carman |
