The College of Basic Sciences nominates and selects students for awards during the academic year. Below is a list of some of these awards.
Outstanding Students in the College
Each year, in conjunction with the Chancellor’s Honor’s Convocation, the outstanding sophomore, junior and senior in each senior college is selected. The Center for Freshman Year selects the outstanding freshmen.

All students enrolled at LSU with a 3.50 or higher grade point average are eligible to apply for these awards. The application and selection period generally begins in February of each year. Students in this college are notified through email about the application process. Criteria established by the University for these awards are:
  • Scholarship-25%
  • Leadership-25%
  • Service-25%
  • Versatility and breadth of Experience-25%
Students are strongly encouraged to apply for these awards. Apply here
A. R. Choppin Honors Convocation
Each Spring, the College of Basic Sciences honors upperclassmen who have maintained averages of 3.70 or higher or who rank in the top 10% of their major. Juniors and seniors are invited to and recognized at this annual college event.
College and department awards are given out at the convocation.

Faculty, staff and parents are invited to this program.

Invitation criteria for the convocation are:
  • 60 (junior standing) or more semester hours earned by the end of the Fall semester preceding the convocation,
  • 3.70 overall and LSU grade point averages or rank in the top 10% of the major,
  • current Spring semester enrollment in the College of Basic Sciences as a full-time student,
  • enrollment in the College of Basic Sciences as a full-time student the immediate preceding Fall semester,
Nomination for awards and program participation
The College of Basic Sciences receives requests during the academic year to nominate students for various awards, honor societies, and leadership programs such as: LSU Senior Leadership Cabinet, Tiger 12, Black Faculty and Staff Caucus awards, Arden O. French Leadership Award, Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities, and Phi Kappa Phi Outstanding Senior and Junior.

Submit a current resume to the Dean’s Office each Fall semester, if you are interested in having the college consider you for awards/honors. A sample brief resume format is provided here.
Distinguished Dissertation Awards
Each year, the LSU Alumni Association sponsors the Distinguished Dissertation Awards. Two awards of $1000 and a certificate are presented each year, one in the arts, humanities, and social sciences and one in science, engineering and technology. For more information, visit the Alumni Association Distinguished Dissertation Award website.

In addition, BASC also recognizes an additional student who has completed a distinguished dissertation with its own College of Basic Sciences Distinguished Dissertation Award. This year the award consists of a certificate and $500.

The nomination consists of a link to the thesis in LSU's ETD (http://etd.lsu.edu/, and a copy of the student's CV. You are also welcome to provide any letters of support from inside or outside of LSU, copies of publications, or other supporting material. Electronic versions are preferred.

If you have a student who receives their doctoral degree at any of the three commencements in the calendar year 2008, you may consider nominating them for this award. Each department may submit one nomination and this year the nominations are due in the College of Basic Sciences by January 23, 2009. Both awards will be presented at the Choppin Honors Convocation, 4:30 pm, March 12, 2009 at the LSU Faculty Club.
