

The College of Basic Sciences is one of the premier research and teaching colleges at LSU. An award-winning faculty and dedicated staff members serve the College with the philosophy that science education is a cumulative experience involving both classroom instruction and laboratory research. Our regular business ours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m each weekday.
The College of Basic Sciences is one of the major academic colleges at LSU, and teaches approximately 60,000 student credit hours every semester. The College includes the departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology & Geophysics, Mathematics, and Physics & Astronomy, and the Museum of Natural Sciences. The College has approximately 228 full-time tenure-track faculty members, and 47 full-time instructors.
Basic Sciences is one of the leading unit at LSU with regards to total grants and contracts; total extramural funding in 2008-09 was $27.8M.

Undergraduate Programs
Approximately 1,549 undergraduate students are seeking a degree in one of our majors (Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology & Geophysics, Mathematics, and Physics & Astronomy). Our students are outstanding scholars, approximately one-third of our students carry a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Many of our students are health related pre-professionals. LSU graduates typically account for approximately one-half of the entering classes at the LSU Medical Centers at New Orleans and Shreveport, and the LSU Dental School in New Orleans. Our students also compete successfully for entry into the finest graduate schools in the country. |

Graduate Programs
All of the departments within the College offer doctoral programs, and three of our departments, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, and Mathematics, have graduate enrollments in excess of 100 students. The department of Chemistry has one of the largest African American Ph.D. student enrollments in the nation. Graduate enrollment for 2009-2010 is 695 students. |
