The goal of
the College of Basic Sciences is to become a national
leader in scientific research and instruction, and
to be a major contributor toward the elevation of LSU to
the next level of excellence among major research universities
in the United States and the world.

The mission
of the College of Basic Sciences is to: provide an environment
for faculty, students, and staff that leads to the creation
and dissemination of new knowledge through scientific research;

provide
the highest quality educational programs for students at both
the undergraduate and graduate levels that will allow them
to pursue successful careers in science and related disciplines,
and

serve
as an intellectual resource for the state and the nation,
including economic development through the transfer of scientific
knowledge into practice.

The College
of Basic Sciences is one of the major academic colleges at
LSU, second only to Arts and Sciences in student credit hours
providing more than 60,000 SCH's every
semester. The College typically ranks first in total
grants and contracts at LSU, with annual awards for the 2004-05
totaling $22.4M. The College
has approximately 170 tenure track,
30 full-time instructors, 1,800 undergraduate majors, and
500 graduate students. Four of the College's five departments
have been designated for budgetary enhancement as Portfolio
Departments: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geology &
Geophysics, and Physics & Astronomy.
