The College
of Basic Sciences sponsors the LSU Premedical/Predental
Review Committee that serves to provide assistance
to students applying to medical or dental school.
The committee is composed of faculty members
from various departments on campus and counselors
from the College of Basic Sciences. The committee
meets regularly with the Deans of Admission
from the LSU Medical and Dental Schools and
stays current on recent trends in medical/dental
school admissions throughout the nation.
While use of the committee
is optional, most medical and dental schools
strongly recommend that students use the committee
at their university during the application for
admission process. The medical/dental schools
value the feedback from the committee because
they are familiar with the course offerings
and curricula requirements of each individual
academic program and can provide unbiased insights
into the applicant’s personal characteristics
and motivation. The committee serves the applicant
by processing and forwarding letters of evaluation
from faculty to the medical/dental schools to
which the applicant is applying and by writing
a composite letter summarizing the student’s
accomplishments and campus involvement. Use
of the committee is open to full-time LSU students
or recent graduates, regardless of major.
Meetings about the committee
requirements and registration procedures are
held each November for students who will be
applying for admission the following year. Meeting
dates will be posted on the website or maybe
obtained from the College of Basic Sciences
Dean’s Office.
