BATON ROUGE – Guillermo Ferreyra, professor of math and associate dean for science education in the College of Science, has been appointed interim dean of the LSU College of Science. Ferreyra will take over for Kevin Carman effective January 1, 2013.

Ferreyra, a native of Argentina, has been with LSU since 1983 and previously served as dean of the College of Arts & Sciences from 2004-2009. In his 29 years with the university, Ferreyra has also served as chair of the Department of Mathematics from 2000-2004, and deputy superintendent of the Office of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, or STEM, education for the Louisiana Department of Education from 2010-2012.

“I am honored to serve the College of Science in the capacity of interim dean,” said Ferreyra. “Under Dean Carman's strong leadership, the College of Science has made significance advances. The College's dedicated faculty and staff have achieved new levels of success in research, in preparing students for careers in science and mathematics, and in community outreach. I look forward to working with all the College of Science community to continue the College's successes and to build upon them.”

“Guillermo has a long history of leadership with LSU,” said LSU Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Stuart Bell. “He’s the perfect fit to lead the College of Science through this transition and to help them maintain the level of excellence that Kevin Carman established.”

Ferreyra received his undergraduate degree from Universidad de Cordoba in Argentina in 1977 and his Ph.D. from Rutgers University in 1983.
