The
shop provides needed support to the Faculty
and researchers within the College of BASC and
all the University community.The facility's
primary mission is to design and fabricate prototypes
of speciality laboratory equipment as well as
repair existing types of glass apparatus and
equipment. It also fabricates regular apparatus
available commercially, but at a lower cost.
Types
of glasses routinely used for fabrication
include
borosilicate (Pyrex), fused
quartz, aluminosilicate, and some glass and lead
glass.
Examples
of special equipment produced by the facility:
Liquid nitrogen /liquid
helium four walled-single body Dewar with quartz
window for low temperature crystallization studies.
Acetone percolation device for ultra cleaning of
cells used in spectroscopy.
Multistage water cooled oil diffusion pumps for
high vacuum.
Glass seals to metals like kovar, tungsten, and
platinum.
Available
equipment includes:
lathes, various hand torches and bench burners,
annealing ovens (one is 7 feet long), polariscope,
equipment for cold working glass, high-vacuum system
for silver deposition. The shop is well stocked
for tubing, valves, and various components.
The
facility is managed
by Adrien Connangle, classically
trained in the well-renowed Lycee Technologique
Dorian in Paris, France.
